In 1931, the failed Pabodie expedition from Miskatonic University, led by William Dyer to the Antarctica discovered the history of ancient life on our planet, among the ruins of a city established by Elder Things from another world. According to H.P. Lovecraft's novel, At The Mountains of Madness, the walls of the city tell a story of great wars with the Mi-Go, the fungi from Yuggoth, and also with the Octopus-headed monstrosities of Great Cthulhu. Dyer and Miskatonic graduate student Danforth were the only survivors of the expedition, but the ancient war has its own survivors. The Mi-Go quietly work away in rural Vermont and in other dark corners of the Earth. Cthulhu waits on the island of R'lyeh in the Pacific, for a time when the stars are right. With a head like an Octopus and bat-like wings, Cthulhu is a giant alien being worshipped by cults around the planet that perform horrible rituals to speed his return as ruler of our world.
